Question 1

What's the difference between the Owlet Smart Sock 2 and 3?

Accepted Answer

The Smart Sock 3 charges wirelessly, has a washable sensor, a better fit and a much longer Bluetooth range than the Smart Sock 2. The bigger difference now is support. The Smart Sock 2 stopped connecting to the internet on April 8, 2025, while the Smart Sock 3 can be converted to Dream Sock in the US and Canada.

Question 2

Owlet Smart Sock 2 vs 3, which one should I buy?

Accepted Answer

Neither, if you're buying new in the US. The Smart Sock 2 no longer connects to the internet, and the Smart Sock 3 has been replaced by the Dream Sock. If you're offered a used Smart Sock 3, first check that you can set it up or convert it in your country.

Question 3

Why was the Owlet Smart Sock 2 discontinued?

Accepted Answer

Owlet took the Smart Sock off the US market in 2021, after the FDA said its live readings and notifications made it a medical device. Owlet ended support for the Smart Sock 2 in April 2025 to move customers onto its FDA-cleared Dream Sock.

Question 4

Is the Owlet Smart Sock 3 discontinued?

Accepted Answer

In the US and Canada, yes. Owlet replaced it with the Dream Sock in early 2022, and Smart Sock 3 owners there can convert their device to Dream Sock.

Question 5

Is the Owlet sock FDA approved?

Accepted Answer

Only the Dream Sock (and the prescription-only BabySat) are FDA-cleared. The Smart Sock 2 and Smart Sock 3 were never cleared by the FDA.
